This quiz was developed and validated by a multidisciplinary measurement committee of the American Urological Association (AUA) for the purpose of calculating a symptom index for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The quiz includes 6 questions covering areas such as frequency, nocturia, weak urinary stream, hesitancy, intermittence, incomplete emptying and urgency. To confirm the validity of the quiz, studies were conducted involving 210 BPH patients and 108 control subjects. The results of the studies showed that the index was consistent internally and the score created had very good test and retest reliability. Also scores correlated highly with subject's global ratings with the degree of their urinary complication, and the score also differentiated highly between BPH and control subjects. The American Urological Association symptom index is reliable, clinically valid and very responsive.
